Spell It! — Click Scrambled Tiles to Build a Word
Subject: English — Spelling | Age Range: Ages 5–12 (Year K–6) | Time to Play: 5–10 minutes
Spell It! is a hands-on, tactile spelling game where the letters of a word are scrambled across tiles and the player must click them in the correct order to spell the word. Unlike multiple-choice spelling questions, Spell It! requires children to actively construct the correct spelling letter by letter — which engages a deeper form of spelling memory. When children produce a spelling actively (rather than recognising it passively), the motor memory of the tapping sequence reinforces the visual memory of the correct letter order. This dual-encoding effect makes the words more memorable. The game presents ten words per session, drawn from age-appropriate vocabulary lists that align to the Australian Curriculum's Language strand and to the spelling lists used in Australian primary school classrooms. For ages 5–6, three- and four-letter CVC words are used: "cat," "sit," "hop." Ages 7–8 encounter five- and six-letter words with common letter patterns. Ages 9–10 face longer, less predictable words including words with silent letters, double consonants, and common homophones. Ages 11–12 tackle the most challenging vocabulary including words from other learning areas — scientific terms, geographic names, and literary vocabulary. A timer adds gentle urgency, but incorrect letter choices are simply removed without penalty, so children can always try again within the same word. Spell It! is one of the most effective digital spelling practice formats because the production requirement means children cannot cheat by guessing from a small set of options — they must know (or work out) the correct letter sequence themselves.
