    Common Difficulties

    The most common difficulty is borrowing (also called regrouping) — for example, in 53-27, you cannot take 7 from 3 without borrowing from the tens column. Use base-ten blocks or stacked written calculations to make this visible. Children also frequently make errors when subtracting across zero (as in 100-43), which requires borrowing through the tens column. Slow practice with concrete materials first is the most reliable fix.
