    Fractions are one of the biggest stumbling blocks in primary school mathematics, and research shows that a child's fraction understanding in Grade 4 is a strong predictor of their overall maths achievement in secondary school. Children who genuinely understand fractions — not just the rule for writing them — have a much easier time with percentages, decimals, ratio, and algebra.

    Who Should Play This?

    Fractions games are most valuable for children in Grades 3-6 (ages 8-12). Grade 3 learners should start with Easy mode, which covers halves, quarters, and thirds. Grade 4-5 learners can tackle comparing and ordering fractions. Grade 6 learners will benefit from the harder equivalent fractions content.

    Tips for Parents and Teachers

    • Always start with visual models — pizza, chocolate bars, or paper folding — before moving to abstract number work
    • Use the language precisely: 'three quarters' means '3 out of 4 equal parts', not 'three divided by four'
    • Make fractions relevant: cooking ('the recipe needs half a cup'), sharing ('let's split this equally'), sport ('they won three out of four games')
    • A common misconception to address: a larger denominator means smaller pieces, so 1/8 is smaller than 1/4

    Common Difficulties

    The most damaging fraction misconception is that the fraction with the bigger numbers is always larger (for example, assuming 3/8 is bigger than 1/2 because 3 and 8 are bigger than 1 and 2). Children need to understand that the denominator defines the size of each piece, so bigger denominators mean smaller pieces. Visual area models — drawing the fractions as parts of a rectangle — are the most reliable way to correct this misconception.
