    Decimals are the number system of everyday life — prices, measurements, statistics, and scientific data all use decimal notation. Children who are comfortable with decimals can interpret real-world information far more confidently than those who find them confusing. Decimals also bridge whole numbers and fractions, and children who understand all three representations have a much more flexible number sense.

    Who Should Play This?

    Decimals games are most appropriate for Grades 4-7 (ages 9-13). Grade 4 learners typically begin with tenths and hundredths. Grade 5-6 learners extend to thousandths and decimal arithmetic. Grade 7 learners use decimals in more complex calculations including percentages and ratios.

    Tips for Parents and Teachers

    • Use money as a real-world model: £3.47 is 3 pounds, 4 ten-pence pieces, and 7 pennies
    • Connect decimals to fractions explicitly: 0.5 = 1/2, 0.25 = 1/4, 0.1 = 1/10
    • Use measurement too: 1.5 metres, 2.75 kilograms — these familiar contexts make decimals meaningful
    • A common mistake to address: 0.8 is NOT less than 0.35 just because 8 < 35 — always look at the place value column by column

    Common Difficulties

    The classic decimal misconception is that more digits after the decimal point means a larger number (so children think 0.35 is bigger than 0.8). This comes from treating decimal digits like whole numbers. The fix is to read decimals column by column: compare the tenths digits first. Since 8 tenths is more than 3 tenths, 0.8 > 0.35. Using a place value chart with labelled columns — ones, tenths, hundredths — makes this comparison process explicit and reliable.
